We oftentimes think that we have to travel far and wide and spend a lot of money to experience the best of what the world has to offer and appreciate nature’s beauty. Indeed some of the best adventures I have had have been in some far flung areas and international travel is one of the most eye opening activities you can do. Its equally important however to remember that you can have an equally out-of-this-world experience in your own backyard. When you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and submerge into delightful tranquility, St Francis Bay is just the escape you need and it comes highly recommended by me.
Welcome to St Francis Bay!
St Francis Bay is situated in the Kouga district of the Eastern Cape, about 100kms south of Port Elizabeth. It lies at the heart of what I famously known as the garden route and is simply one of South Africa’s most unique and exclusive coastal destinations. Once you experience the magical beauty of St Francis Bay, you will want to come back. Ask Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, they bought a hideaway house here.
St Francis Bay has the most beautiful pristine beaches and a laid back lifestyle and is perfect water sports, golf and beach bumming.
WHERE TO STAY
You have choice to stay at a hotel, B&B or self catering vacation rentals. St Francis Bay has got plenty of options for accommodation to cater for exactly what you are looking for, but be sure to book early especially during peak season (November to January)
Waking to the sound of waves crashing on the beach below; enjoying the view of the surfers making the most of the waves while you sip on a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee on your private deck; and then slipping into the adjacent rim flow pool for a refreshing pre-breakfast swim. This is the kind of idyllic beach life that awaits visitors to The Sands @ St Francis.
Set in the exclusive enclave of St Francis Bay, the luxury getaway of choice for many of South Africa’s who’s who, as well as a favourite playground for sun and sea seeking holidaymakers. The Sands @ St Francis makes the most of its ideal setting, just minutes from the village’s centre, and with unrivalled access to a pristine swathe of beach just below.

WHAT TO DO
Book a sunset canal cruise and cruise the St Francis Bay canals and take in the beautiful weather, local residents and the property.
We visited St Francis Bay towards the end of December and the sun just wouldn’t come down soon enough for us to catch the sunset. But it didn’t matter because the cruise alone was just pure bliss
Watch the Sunset – for the most beautiful sunsets and whale watching, grab a picnic basket and head to Sunset Rock.
WHERE TO EAT
Have breakfast at the Rambling Rose
Go for a dinner date at Tail & Thyme Restaurant & Cocktail Bar
Situated along the canals is another great option for dinner – a Greek restaurant known as The Big Time Taverna. Everything about this restaurant is authentically Greek – from decor, to food, wine, speciality drinks such as Ouzo and Metaxa Brandy.
Go for a drink at the St Francis Brewing Company. As the name would suggest, they are big on their beers and offer a selection of craft brands for beer lovers.
For lazy afternoons, go to Quaysyde, a laid back barbeque restaurant – pizza, ribs, ciders & beers kind of vibe. Take pictures on the peer.
Life’s Good in St. Francis Bay – will definitely go back soon!
